Relationship
Management
Involves
Realizing the Needs of Others
Relationship
management means different things to different people.
In
the business world Customer Relationship is a strategy used to learn
more about customers' needs and behaviors in order to develop stronger
relationships with them.
This is not too unlike a
dating relationship, is it? We all want to learn more about
our "customer"...but in this case, our customer is our "significant
other".
And as we mention throughout this website,
strong and healthy relationships are based (i.e.
"managed") on
a solid foundation of
trust, respect, honesty, commitment, etc.
Dating
and romantic relationship building is often conceptualized as beginning with a
friendship and developing into a communion marked by passion,
commitment and intimacy.
 And
the way to build upon
a
healthy relationship is to understand the relationship communication
process and take steps toward relationship building.
What
better way to start an open relationship and gain trust, respect and commitment than to
learn about your partner's needs and desires and trying your best to
satisfy them.
Within sensible reason, of course.
A
useful way to think about relationship management is to see it as a
long term process that will help you better understand your partner.
Relationship
management is an art form that you can master with a little practice
and attention.
The key to managing relationship issues is to understand what
is important and what is not.
Since each
relationship
is different, the priorities change from time to time. But there are
some common and important points that should be considered when
managing a relationship:
Spend
"Quality" Time
Together
- Communicate with
your partner and set up time to
spend together...just the two of you.
- In spending
time together, you
both strengthen and maintain your bond.
Communicate
- Communication
is essential in relationship management, but that doesn’t mean anything
unless you both are willing and able to listen to one another as well.
- In
listening, you show your partner that you care about her/him and
that what she or he has to say is very important to you.
Accommodating
Partner’s Needs
- This does not
mean sacrificing your own
needs. Your own needs are important because if you don’t take
care of yourself, you won’t be in a position to recognize and satisfy
your partner’s needs.
- But don't overdo it and
become
self-centered.
Relationship management
is not always
easy, but by recognizing what needs prioritizing and then putting forth
some effort can successfully ensure that the relationship will
be a satisfying and healthy one.
Are there any
indications that you are in an unhealthy relationship and in need of improvement?
You
may need to seek relationship help when it is clear you don’t have an
accurate view of who your partner's needs or desires are...or might be
at any given stage in their lives.
Some tell tale
signs:
Experts
will agree that a little conflict in a relationship is quite normal and
often healthy. But when it leads to endless pain, then it
time to take action and seek relationship help.
