Relationship Counseling
A Great Benefit For Many

There is sometimes a bit of stigma attached to relationship counseling.

People think that if you go for therapy you must be really crazy or too weak to solve your own problems.

Nothing could be further from the truth. Seeking help shows positive energy and purpose.

The fact that you are proactively trying to solve your problems is a sign of courage and strength.

By seeking help from a professional, you show that you are willing and able to do not only what it takes, but that you want the best possible advice and guidance that you can get.

Relationship management comes in many forms, one-on-one relationship therapy, practical relationship coaching, online life coach or even support group therapy.

It is not just married couples who need relationship counseling. Any troubled relationship will benefit from professional counseling and relationship advice.

It may be even that you have a healthy relationship but feel that you want to re-affirm your boundaries and put your relationship into perspective after having been some time together.

Many married couples today have relationship advice and counseling before their wedding.

The minister who officiates at the wedding ceremony will spend time with the couple, getting to know them as a couple and as individuals.

We all have different love needs and expressions.

Some people, for instance, need verbal confirmation of love; others prefer to show their love.

Understanding your partner’s love needs and expressions goes a long way in smoothing the rocky road of love.

But not everyone understands their own love needs and expressions. How then can they expect their partner to fulfill their needs?

A relationship counselor can help you to become more self-aware and be able to communicate your thoughts, feelings and needs to your partner.

Counseling can help you to resolve your relationship issues, but it has another useful purpose and that is to put perspective on what, if any, relationship issues you have and what kind of help you need.

For instance, if one partner has a drug or alcohol problem and refuses to seek help, therapy may show the individual why he or she needs to go for addiction treatment and also will be useful in helping the other partner to realize the problem is not their fault.

Measurement of the effectiveness of external relationship guidance and relationship counseling is whether certain goals have been achieved.

Before going for counseling, you need to sit down with your partner and make a list of the goals or outcomes you expect to achieve by taking this step. In your first session with a counselor, you also need to discuss these goals and expectations.

While you might still feel uncomfortable about asking for help (and generally most people don’t like asking for help), remember that the alternative is to remain stagnant in your relationship.

Relationship problems don’t solve themselves. In fact, generally they become worse.
