Personals Ad
May be Revealing
More than You Intended
Personals ad have traditionally been newspaper and magazine ads that
usually consist of a few lines.
Today, when we think of ads like these, we hear terms like online
profile and dating personals.
But
there is still a great demand for personal news and paper
ads>
Sometimes they are free in which case a publisher makes money
by
charging telephone fees when an interested person calls to answer the
ad.
Some
weaknesses of "hard-copy" personal ads such as those found
in newspapers and magazines.
- Inadequate
membership size. At most only a few hundred ads are available
at any given time.
- Limited number of readers and/or subscribers.
- Physical appearance cannot be judged.
More often than not, photos are not published along with ads.
- Short description. Only a few lines
of text are given to describe yourself and your criteria.
Advice on
writing a personals ad.
Find the
correct publication
- Is
it in your local newspaper? Consider the
circulation?
- If
you live in a small town, you may find that the person answering your
ad just happens to be the person you know down the street.
- Enter your ad into a larger newspaper or
magazine with a larger area coverage.
Convey what
you want
- Define
exactly what you are expecting to find.
- You might want to
include
looking for love, romance, friendship, sex, travel, penpals, etc.
Send a
positive message
- As
briefly as you can, explain why you are the perfect choice for a
starting a relationship with.
- In marketing terms, this would
be
called "selling yourself".
- But that meaning might not be too
appropriate for the personals ad.

the posting fee and terms

- Will you pay per word or per paragraph?
- How will you be billed for the service?
- How does a potential partner get in touch with
you?

that appeals to the masses
- If you are too specific in your wants, you may
never find that perfect someone.
- Or if you are too picky, you may come across in
poor light.

clear of what you want and what you are willing to accept.
Include
hobbies

of interest to you.
- This way like-minded individual have a common
ground to start the relationship off with.
Proper use of
wording
- Words such as "full-figured", "great
personality" and "slight balding" often conjure up negative images.

- Attraction is a big factor in the beginning of
any relationship. But a lasting relationship includes a lot
more.
Make your
personals ad stand out
- Don't write a cliche such as "loves moonlit
walks on the beach".
- Be creative and tie it into your interests.
Be
brief...but clear
- A good ad will be clear, brief and to the point.
- While many people have the need to express
themselves, this is not the time.
- There's always time later on down the road, if
you do your "first impression" correctly.
Not too
personal
- Never
include identifying information, such as phone number, street address,
last name, office location or any other identifying remarks that could
lead the undesirables to find you.
Keep it real
- The best advice is to just be yourself.
- If you want the relationship to last, be
yourself and find the person who will love you for that.
- Don't fake it...that never works in the long
run.
