Do Dating
Services Really Work?
Dating services. and in particular, online dating has developed into a
billion dollar industry over the past decade.
When
online dating originally took off in the early 1990s it was perceived
by many as an place where the desperate or "undesirables"
would go.
Now, websites are full with people from every corner of the world and
from every walk of life, to include the "desirable" types.
By
the mid 2000s, more than 50 million users have visited online dating
sites in the United States alone.
Given
the vast amount of people visiting websites designed around dating
services, it seems logical to assume that dating match
websites
have become viewed by many as an alternative approach to tradition
dating and romance.
But does this mean that online dating
websites have replaced face-to-face meetings, introduction and
the
romantic courtship process. Absolutely not.
It is not
fully understood to what degree technology has influenced the natural
selection of a partner through the use of "matching" to a perfect mate.
Since existence, human beings have honed their skills at
finding a mate by using all of the senses.
This
would include, of course, sight (body language, attraction, dress and
appearance), sound (being able to articulate feelings over email is
vastly different than in-person), and smell (perfume, natural body
pheromones).
What happens when we are matched to a person using
an online dating match service?
Does the affect of
not being
able to meet face-to-face alter the natural course of bonding.
Perhaps
someone who would have been our ultimate perfect partner in life
otherwise is passed over due to a flaw in the matching process
or
a poorly written email.
However, the converse could be
argued...would you even be able to reach out to potentially thousands
upon thousands of individuals without the use of the online dating?
One
thing that is lacking on all online dating match services is the
ability for technology (computer generated dating software), to
accurately perceived interpersonal interaction and attraction.
Computer
dating software offers a limited set of communication channels compared
to face-to-face interaction.
This forces people to use other
(nontraditional) means to evaluate potential partners.
What happens when two people meet face-to-face for the first time after
being "matched" through an online dating match?
Sometimes
wonderful things happen. However...statistics show that the
majority often express disappointment in their experiences.
We believe that this is due, in part, to the misperceptions of one
another through previously online dating channels.
As we continuously stress throughout this website, cast a wide
net. If online dating works for you...great!
The most avenues you choose to meet new people the better chance you
have of finding that special someone.
But
just as we would not recommend using one single online dating service
as you sole matchmaking tool...
we would not recommend sitting in the
same bar stool night after night looking for Mr./Mrs. Right.
Mix
it up!
